Pilates Does a Body Good

March signifies the start of spring here in Charleston, and with the wonderful temperatures we've been having and all of the flowers blooming, it's time to get in gear for swimsuit season! I first tried Pilates a few years ago and have always had a love for it. Luckily, we have one of the best Pilates studios right here in Charleston, Classical Pilates Studio. Owner and entrepreneur, Beth Sterne, was nice enough to sit down with us and share her expertise and the exciting plans she has in store...

How long have you been teaching and how did you get started?

I started practicing Pilates in 1998. I had played sports all my life and had some muscles that were tight and overdeveloped. Before I started Pilates, I was experiencing lower back pain, and when I was under a lot of stress, I felt extreme tightness and pain in my shoulders and neck. Pilates instantly relieved this pain. I was converted! I soon noticed improvement in my posture. My muscles were becoming more defined. The changes were subtle in terms of inches but dramatic in terms of overall appearance. I appeared taller, stronger and more confident. My strength, flexibility and muscle tone as well as overall body awareness and concentration started to dramatically increase. I wanted to learn more about this life-changing method.

I have been practicing ever since.

I've been teaching since 2001. I lived in New York City for several years to study with many of the most talented and renowned teacher trainers in the world. In 2004, I moved to Charleston, SC to open my studio Classical Pilates Studio and can't believe I'm in my 8th year of business! Time flies!

What was the inspiration behind creating your new

Pilates DVD, Pilates for Health?

I have a lot of very dedicated baby boomer clients who have seen and felt great benefits from their Pilates practice with me. They come because they want to feel better and stay strong as they age. Their motivation is more constructive than wanting a firmer butt or a flatter stomach. They want to improve their quality of life.

Many of these clients relayed to me that they had told their spouse or friends about the benefits they enjoy from Pilates, but often get pushback from these people that are reluctant to try Pilates for various reasons...ranging from feeling intimidated to work out with others in the studio, to not wanting to pay for it, to being too busy to schedule and appointment. I wanted to reach these people who know they need a balanced workout, to stretch them out and strengthen their core as they age. I recruited my mother to be my model and we shot the video; which is a 20 minute, carefully thought out workout that is safe and effective enough for all beginners of all fitness levels.

If you had to pick a favorite piece of athletic wear, that you couldn't live without, what would it be?

The Lululemon Studio Crop pants are hands down my favorite pants. People ask me about them all the time. They have a great light fabric and are great to work out in or to wear running errands, lunch, etc. The drawbacks are that they are kind of pricey and often hard to find at Lululemon.

Tell us how you fuel up in the morning...

My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. Since I hit the ground running with an active morning teaching schedule, I eat a hearty breakfast. I usually eat French toast made with two eggs and two pieces of sprouted wheat bread, which has a lot of fiber, nutrients and is easy to digest.

I can't live without my tea in the a.m. I have one cup of Republic of Tea's coconut and vanilla white tea. White tea has slightly less caffeine than green tea and more antioxidants. White tea has a very mild taste so it is easy to enhance with subtle flavors, and I love the coconut vanilla combination.

I truly believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially if you have a very active job like I do.

Are there any exciting plans you have in store for Classical Pilates Studio in 2012?

I'm so excited about 2012 for a couple of reasons. One, is that I have clients that have been coming to me for seven years now, and I introducing new super advanced modifications to exercises that they have been working on for years. I tell people that you never stop learning. The day that you think you have mastered Pilates, is the day that I introduce something new. I am still learning and evolving every year myself.

Another reason that I am excited for 2012 is that I have a new piece of equipment that is rarely seen in studios - the Gratz armchair; which is exactly what is sounds like - a chair that supports your posture as you work the arm springs. This chair will challenge the arms and the upper body in ways that my clients haven't exactly experienced on the other apparatus. It allows for more range of motion, which will encourage opening (stretching) of the chest and shoulders as well as strengthening and defining.

Yes, yes most of the time I feature something that pertains to interior design for Monday's Muse, but for those of you who don't know I was fashion major in college and it has a huge influence in my design work. Lately, I have been obsessing over shoes - mainly shoes that show some skin and nice pedicure. We really haven't had a cold winter this year in Charleston, so I can't justify buying a pair of boots when spring is right around the corner and it is supposed to be 75 Thursday. And who doesn't get inspired by warmer temperatures, pretty colors, and the thought of cocktails outside!

It's always fun getting to know other designers and people in the industry, so I wanted to feature a wonderful designer I met a couple of years ago at a design conference in NY. Susan Jamieson, principal of Bridget Beari Designs, is based in Virginia and just partnered with Fine Paints of Europe to create her own paint line, Bridget Beari Colors. Below are a few questions...

How did you get started in interior design?

My love for interior design started when I was five or six. I would take my mother's furniture catalogs and cut out the pictures to do my own room arrangements. I went on to study interior design in college and abroad in Florence, Italy. My passion for interior design has been the constant in my life.

What is one of your staple/favorite paint colors?

If I had to pick a favorite it would of course be a Bridget Beari Color from my custom color paint line in Fine Paints of Europe. I am a neutral girl at heart, so my line is full of great taupes/whites/khakis but my favorite is No. 62 Biscuit. It is a great base color for any room.

Do you have a favorite project and why was/is it your favorite?

There are so many projects I have worked on that I could call my favorite, but if I had to choose one it would be a beach house on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Doing an international job has it's own challenges, but the scenery that surrounds this house is breathtaking. I loved working with a different style of architecture and I hope that when it is finally completed it can be photographed. I like the fact that I left Tulum with a little taste of the Bridget Beari style.

How did you create your own paint line with Fine Paints of Europe?

I have been creating my own paint colors for years by tweaking already existing colors to get them just right for a certain job.People told me I should package all my colors and stains together so when the opportunity arose to work with Fine Paints of Europe I jumped at it. I am excited to be partnering with such a high quality paint company. FPE has some unique finishes like their Hallandlac Brilliant that can give you a high lacquer look with less coats.

How did you come up with the names for the paints?

All the names of the BBD color paints are named after dogs, cats or horses from clients, neighbors, employees or my own. Bridget Beari, the company, is named after my two dogs. We are big animal lovers here at Bridget Beari.

What is a common mistake people make when tackling a design project?

I think the biggest mistake people make is their inability to visualize all of the different elements that make up a beautiful interior. Most people know what looks good when they see it, but where they falter is their
inability to put things together.

Which top three items would you tell a client to invest in?

Quality sofa, original artwork and some antiques. I can't stand rooms that look like they came off a showroom floor. I love to mix antiques and modern pieces.

If you could meet with any designer (living or deceased) who would it be?

Sister Parish, Albert Hadley or Nancy Lancaster. I just love that era of design. Just to have cocktails and hear the stories would be a dream!

What exciting things do you have planned for 2012?

I am working on a custom wallpaper line to work with the Bridget Beari Color paint line and a Bridget Beari book on Color Rules! Plus one of my prize houses is ready for photography! It will be an exciting 2012!

The picture below does not do it justice, and if I could send each of you a sample, I would. That's how much I love it! It's fun and glamorous with amazing dimension and detail. For my Connecticut project, we have chosen Pink Cotton Candy (below) to use on the ceiling in the girls bathroom (I will definitely share those photos with you when it's installed)! It's available in several bright colors, as well as a few on the more subtle side. So here's to a little eye/rock candy...

There are so many things I would love to share with you from my holiday in Hawaii, but one of the most fascinating is the Marilyn Monroe House, which we came across on the road to Hana. I was lured in by the story behind the house, so I knew I had to share it with you.

In 1957, when Marilyn Monroe was married to Arthur Miller, she contacted Frank Lloyd Wright about designing a house for them in CT, to escape the limelight. Wright had plans in mind, which were originally 7,000 square feet and designed for a Texas couple who never built the home. Before showing the plans to Monroe and Miller, Wright added a swimming pool, nursery and a movie theater bringing the design to 14,000 square feet. Shortly after, Monroe and Miller divorce and Wright passed away, leaving the blueprints to sit in an archive at Taliesne West.

Fast forward to 1986, when Japanese investors paired with "Pundy" Yokouchi, a generous patron of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, to bring Wright's design to Maui as a golf property. Wright's work was known for it's Asian influence, so the Japanese always had a fondness for his style. Taliesin architect and Wright's apprentice, John Rattenbury, took the original plans and added five times more space; placing two-thirds of the 75,000 square foot structure underground, while preserving Wright's original proportions above. Rattenbury stayed true to Wright's design elements and brought in expert craftsmen experienced in Wright's projects.

Originally, the $35 million clubhouse opened in 1993 but was sold six months later, and eventually closed in 1999. However in 2004, Tokyo tycoon and part-time Maui resident, Makoto Kaneko, bought the property for $12.5 million and completed a $40 million renovation before re-opening it's doors and naming it after King Kamehameha. Characterizing some of Wright's best work, the interior offers an organic feeling throughout with curved walls and wide porthole windows; as well expansive views of Ho'okipa Bay, Ma'aleaea Bay and Haleakela volcano. Today, it is Maui's only 18-hole private golf club.

I am a girl that takes a bath every single night, so going shopping with a client for a bath is beyond exciting (only wish I was shopping for me too). My client also shares the ritual of a daily bath, so the master bath is a very important decision not only from a visual standpoint, but a functional standpoint as well. Over the past month I have looked at many baths, and now I have two clients who have decided on Victoria + Albert for their master baths. Victoria + Albert baths are all made from 100% volcanic limestone and high performance resins, and all come with a 25 year warranty. What I love about this line is that they offer a wide variety of styles and they are all sculptural works of art. Here is a glimpse of some of my favorites...

I wanted to share with you a couple of last minutes ideas from the

gang at Daily Candy and The Meatball Shop.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Perfect Hot Toddy

Ingredients

1 c. hot water

1 bag chamomile tea

1-2 tbsp. honey

juice of 1/2 lemon

3 oz. ruby port

2 cinnamon sticks

In a medium-size mug, combine water, tea and honey.

Stir and let tea steep about 2 minutes before removing tea bag.

Add juice, port, and cinnamon sticks.

(Makes one toddy)

Gobble Gobble Turkey Meatballs

Ingredients
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 lb. ground turkey
2 c. garlic croutons (recipe below) or stuffing cubes
1 c. dried cranberries
2 lg. eggs
¼ c. bread crumbs
2 tbsp. chopped fresh sage
2 tsp. salt
Pinch of ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 450°. Drizzle olive oil into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and use your hand to evenly coat the entire surface. Set aside.

2. Combine ground turkey, croutons, cranberries, eggs, bread crumbs, sage, salt, and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl and mix by hand until thoroughly incorporated.

3. Roll the mixture into golf ball-size meatballs, packing the meat firmly. Place the balls in the prepared baking dish, lining them up snugly and in even rows vertically and horizontally to form a grid. The meatballs should touch.

4. Roast 20 minutes, or until the meatballs are firm and cooked through. A meat thermometer inserted into the center of a meatball should read 165°.

5. Allow the meatballs to cool for 5 minutes in the baking dish before serving.

I have to say, it really is nice to get back into writing after a three week hiatus. I apologize to my readers, but I had to take a little time out to focus on project installations; as well as my wonderful trip to CT to visit with my Greenwich clients (more on that project Wednesday).

To kick off this week I want to share with you one of my favorite products. Forbes & Lomax has been around for 20 years (established in London) and are now showcasing their brilliant idea in the US. These are screwless, flush to the wall acrylic plates allowing wallpaper and paint to show through; eliminating those unsightly plates we have become accustomed to. (I know...why didn't I think of that, right?) Not only do they offer the Invisible Lightswitch, but dimmers and outlets as well. Genius!

I have been so lucky to work with some of my favorite showrooms in Manhattan for my Greenwich project. During my last visit we went into the city for the day and visited a showroom I have been dying to work with - Mosaic House. Mosaic House hand makes all of their tiles giving them that antique look. These tiles are all suitable for any application (as well as interior and exterior depending on the climate). If you can't visit them in person, make sure you visit their website to see their gorgeous array of colors and designs. Over the weekend I was finally able to view Bill Cunningham New York On Demand (I gave up on it coming to the big screen in Charleston). This is by far one of the best and most interesting documentaries I've ever seen, unveiling the life of New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. This 80-something year old has been chronicling NY fashion on the streets (by means of his bicycle) and within high society for decades - always praising the styles and never bashing anyone. With his staple blue jacket and the camera around his neck (I swear he sleeps with it), Bill shows audiences a rare glimpse inside his extremely modest, yet fascinating life. There are so many surprising, lovely aspects of this film and this man, it is something you must see for yourself!

I think this FlyAway Friday out of all FlyAway Fridays is the most appropriate to honor New York City, especially with the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. I was just in Manhattan last week, and leaving it was just as hard as it's always been. New York is such a magical place for me, with endless sources of inspiration. It's where I spent the hardest and most rewarding time of my life...and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Grub
I take my food very seriously when I visit NY. I love anything and everything Italian so if there is one place (besides Italy) I will overload on my carb intake, it's Manhattan. These are places I have been going to repeatedly for at least eight years. They are tried and true and I cannot rave enough about each of them.

Bar Pitti
Definitely a place to see and be seen. Beyonce, Kate Hudson, Lauren Hutton just to name a few. Cool vibe, outside dining, and a pappardelle to die for.

Dos Caminos
Again, great people watching and yummy margaritas

Lombardi's
Hands down, THE BEST pizza on the planet. Prepare to either go early or wait because this is no longer a little secret...

Gradisca
Each time I have eaten here, I swear it's the best meal I've ever had. Mama sets up her table in the front of the restaurant and literally makes your pasta in front of you. Tenderloin so tender you can cut it with your fork and a balsamic so delicious you could write a song about it.
As much as I have raved about this place to other people, it has never disappointed ANYONE.

I am picky when it comes to sushi and I liked this place so much when I lived in the city, I ate there twice a week. The UWS location has great outdoor dining and the tuna sashimi is divine.

The Glamorous Homes of Vintage Hollywood

One of my all time favorite books is Hollywood Life, The Glamorous Homes of Vintage Hollywood. This was a wonderful gift given to me when I lived in NY, by my previous employer Elaine Griffin. The book captures a collection of homes of the rich and famous in Hollywood, mainly from the post war era through the mid-60s. Not only are the photographs of old Hollywood BEYOND intriguing (all by Eliot Elisofon); but the book itself is wrapped in a dark brown suede stamped in Tiffany blue, with a cover photo of Tony Curtis. The introduction by Gavin Lambert, gives a fascinating glimpse into how Hollywood came about once the "movie people" started moving in. This is a true inside look into old Hollywood, the homes, the social circles; as well as all of the hot spots where they ate, drank and danced the night away. Definitely worth every penny.

Some of my favorite pieces of jewelry and furniture have come from different flea markets, so in keeping with my NYC theme this week, I thought I would let you in on my top choices for markets in the city. If you're looking for furiture, collectibles, jewelry or great food; these are the places to go...

Brooklyn Flea Market
By far this is known as a top contender and draws quite the crowd. Not sure if it's because of the food, furniture, clothing or because it was named "One of New York's Essential Pick Up Spots" by Time Out New York.

The Antiques Garage

This is a must stop for me any time I'm in the city. Knowledgable vendors known for their amazing, rare items.

Hell's Kitchen Flea Market

The Gourmet Food Truck Bazaar is located in the center of this market, so if you're not a shopper be sure to bring your appetite. Last year, Time Out New York named this the place to buy the "best furniture".

Chelsea Antiques & Showcase

Probably my best jewelry find last year was at the Chelsea market. Be prepared to sort through a variety of items, but well worth it. Go before 10am.

GreenFlea Market

Located in my old neighborhood of the Upper West Side, this market carries both vintage and new items and it is reasonable. One of the only markets I've found where some craftsman offer custom furniture and jewelry.

Yes, we are doing Monday's Muse on Tuesday, but I think it is well worth the wait. Tomorrow I leave for CT to meet with my wonderful Greenwich clients and for the amazing BOD conference (and some fun too). Because NY is so close to my heart, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to feature an "All Things NY" week.

I don't even know where to begin with Madeline Weinrib. I have loved her carpets and designs for so long; and if that wasn't enough she now has evening bags, clothing, furniture and accessories as part of her collection. Based in NYC, she is known for her rich colors and luxurious patterns - and I wouldn't expect anything less from the granddaughter of ABC Carpet & Home founder, Max Weinrib.

One more reason to love her...she is a trustee of Project Mala - a non-profit organization committed to eradicating child labor in the carpet industry.

Great design has a lot to do with being able to mix textures and blending elements together to add layers and depth. I am always attracted to pieces that combine that ying and yang aspect, which is why I still can't get this console out of my head (I found it last month at Jerry Pair in Atlanta). It's the Half Lyre Console by Michael Taylor Designs. The rough texture on the base pairs beautifully with the glossy, espresso finish on the top. Once I found this piece, I found several other pieces from this collection that can work in a variety of settings. Hopefully I will be able to use this soon in a client's house!

A few years ago I went on a two week adventure through Ireland and saw the most gorgeous landscapes and vibrant colors I have ever seen. Our trek started out in Shannon visiting one of my besties and her precious family. It was the first time I had planned an excursion with no real schedule or plan, other than our arrival and departure locations, and a car rental. I strongly suggest this, especially in a place like Ireland. We took our time traveling up the coastal highway, then through Belfast, and ending our journey in Dublin. Spending two-three days in each location was an amazing way to see a majority of Ireland, as well as learn the culture and get to know the people. So pack your wellies and let's go!

Last week I was in Charlotte doing some finishing touches on our project at The Vue. Lucky for me, my client introduced me to some amazing art galleries and we spent all day shopping for art (I love my job). I don't like to play favorites, but once I walked into the Elder Art Gallery and saw an enormous Carl Plansky painting, well you could say he had me at hello. His use of layered strokes creating thick coats of oil mesmerized me...I could have stayed there all day. Unfortunately, Plansky passed away in 2009, but he was known for achieving this look by applying paint with a plasterer's trowel, rags and large brushes. In the 80s he began making batches of handmade paint for himself and other artists. This is now known as Williamsburg Oil Pain t, one of the most reputable oil paint makers in the world. His outstanding use of colors and his brushstroke style make his elegant works of art second to none.

There is nothing better than some fresh ingredients from the farmer's market and a few cooking shows to inspire some new recipes in the kitchen. My current kitchen is no where close to my dream kitchen, however I am adding Mick De Giulio's collection for Kallista to my files for that future kitchen. For those of you who are not familiar with Mick De Giulio, he is one of the most talented and celebrated kitchen designers in the world, so he definitely knows a thing or two about functionality and what people want.

This collection features two single basin sinks - the Multiere (45") and the Soltiere (33"),as well as an entertainment sink - The Bacifore (18"). Both single sink basins have a corner drain, creating more usable space within the basin as well as more storage space underneath the sink. Custom accessories include a teak cutting board with knife holder, colander holder, sharpening rod, dishcloth holder, drain board and flatware tray. The chic Bacifore comes in a polished stainless steel that hides fingerprints, patina that naturally occurs and scratches.

I have to confess, it has taken me a while to write today's post for FlyAway Friday. Argentina is such a special place to me and wanted to make sure I did it justice. It's been almost two years since I visited with TOMS Shoes, and traveling throughout the region and experiencing the culture was one of the most rewarding times of my life. We spent time in Buenos Aires, although not enough, so I definitely plan to return in the near future.

When I first decided on Argentina, I had no idea of the sophistication, energy and style that this city had to offer. It reminded me of New York (with neighborhoods such as Palermo SoHo), but others say it's the Paris of South America. This uber sexy city is known for their thick steaks, tango halls (which I was lucky enough to experience with a local friend), and a ridiculous nightlife that doesn't truly get started until after midnight and goes all night long. If you are looking for an unforgettable getaway, with a lot to offer (including the Mendoza wine region), then pack your bags...

For some time now I have been trying to decide on a new headboard. I have been completely obsessed with upholstered headboards for two main reasons - the beauty and variations of the design, as well as the comfort of sitting in bed against something plush while I work on my laptop or read through the bazillion magazines on my bedside table. Tufting is also what I am drawn to the most, so most likely I will go that route. I am definitely one who loves color, but my bedroom has always been an escape for me- peaceful and serene. My walls are Sherwin Williams Sea Salt (#6204 - one of my all time favorite colors), so I am planning on a neutral fabric - and most likely a luscious velvet or linen. Here are my top picks...I would love to hear what your favorite is!

Over the weekend I was browsing through sink ideas for a new project and I came across these beauties from Porcher. The Slate Collection is definitely well suited for a modern or contemporary space, and all are honed which makes them graceful and soft to the touch. The basins are made from a solid piece of volcanic slate so the veining is unique and varies on every piece. Available in above counter or drop in, as well as four different shapes. And yes, there is quite a price tag for this collection, so don't say I didn't warn you.

A very special surprise came in the mail yesterday, and I had to share it with you as my pick for the book of the month. I'm fortunate that I am able to travel a lot for work and fun, and any chance I get to take a drive on a back road, I take it. There is something I love about passing through unknown small towns, seeing the simplicity, the peacefulness, and feeling as though I have been transported back in time. Over the years I have stopped at every chance to take pictures of country homes, churches or beautiful open fields; but there has always been a fascination with abandoned homes. I always wonder who lived there, what their life was like, and why the home was ever left. This all brings me to the beautiful book RUIN by Brian Vanden Brink. This is a collection of these unexpected beauties, which Brian has photographed over a period of thirty years during his travels as a professional photographer. This book is by far one of my favorites now (don't bypass the Photographer's Statement-beautifully written). I couldn't help but stare through this book for hours last night, and I think I will continue to be intrigued by these mysterious places for a while to come...

2 cans of tomato wedges – drained well

Put in frozen pie crust

Sprinkle with chopped chives, basil & spring onions

Mix ½ cup of mayo (I use olive oil mayo) with 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese

Spread on top of tomatoes

Sprinkle with more chopped chives, basil & spring onions

Salt & pepper to taste

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes

Let sit for 10 minutes before serving

Waking up to a view like this, I HAD to do this post of FlyAway Friday about Charlotte, NC. It's not the sunniest of days here, but I am lucky enough that my wonderful clients let me stay in their beautiful condo we have designed, while they are out of town (high atop the 39th floor).

I know, I am a lucky girl, I love my job and sometimes I have to pinch myself.

For a girl that has lived in NY and travels to Atlanta often, I love Charlotte because it has all of the amenities of a big city, but it is clean, beautiful and in some areas feels like a small town. Every time I visit Charlotte, my clients have introduced me to the best restaurants (again, lucky girl) and places to go, so I've listed some of my favorites below (dedicated to you foodies and shopaholics out there).

The first time I came across an Aria Ventilatori ceiling fan was at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Showhouse at Lake Keowee in 2008. The house, designed by AV's co-founder Beth Webb, is still one of my all time favorites. For something that is often forgotten about (or at least not given much attention to by most people) Webb and lighting designer, Joanne Sims, will make you think twice. These are one-of-a-kind fans made in Italy and distrubuted out of Atlanta (I mean really, is there anything from Italy that isn't beautiful?). With hand-carved blades and cast iron bodies, these works of art can be showcased in interior or exterior environments and will compliment any style.
